Ride Active provides FREE fun, social cycling practice activities in safe, secure environments in Northfield and surrounding areas. All abilities and beginners are very welcome.  Delivered by Cycle South Brum and British Cycling.

Every Thursday we offer Learn To Ride cycling tuition and a gentle Led Bike Ride at 5pm, meeting at Northfield Ecocentre. Please arrive 30mins early if you want to borrow a bike as they are subject to availability. We will also have helmets, bike lights, and high-visibility vests for you to borrow.

The aim of Ride Active is to help normalise choosing cycling as a form of everyday transport. There has never been a better time to start cycling in the city. Over the last few years there has been a massive investment in cycle infrastructure, including new, safer cycleways on the A34 and A38, as well as improved routes along our 100 miles of canals and our 571 parks & green spaces.

We provide fun cycling practice activities and Learn To Ride sessions perfect for anyone who is just starting to ride, is currently learning and needs practise, is returning to cycling or feels a little nervous or wobbly on the bike.

If you can already ride a bike but are looking to gain more confidence on two wheels, learn new cycle routes or have fears of cycling on the roads join the group for a Led Bike Ride.

These are 90-minute sessions which allow you to practice and improve your skills, cycle in a group and meet other cyclists. Learn To Ride will take place in Victoria Common, Northfield. We try to use cycle paths, parks and canals where possible but during the winter from November-February the led ride will use quiet roads as it will be too dark.

The meeting point for Ride Active is Northfield Ecocentre. Please arrive early if you need to borrow a bike. All abilities welcome, including complete beginners.

As described above Ride Active sessions will incorporate Cycling Skills and a Led Ride which anyone who wants to improve their confidence is welcome to take part in. Children aged 12+ are welcome to join in but must be accompanied by a cycling adult. If you’re looking for children-only activities please look out for children’s cycling tuition and our school holiday led rides.

Can I borrow a bike?

We have a limited number of bikes for hire. You will be able to reserve a bike when you book.  Bikes can be collected on the day 30mins before your session.  If you have your own bike then please bring it.

We have  helmets to borrow for these events, subject to availability.  If you do not have a helmet and you would like to borrow one for the ride you are attending, you can indicate this when you book.  If you have your own helmet, you are welcome to bring it.

Is there a cost for attending?

No, it is free, but you are welcome to make a donation online or in cash on the day.

Weather policy

Our ride leaders will make the final decision on whether to alter, cancel or terminate a session due to inclement weather or poor surfaces.  Please look after your personal belongings as we cannot accept any responsibility for them.  You are welcome to leave your belongings in Northfield Ecocentre during the ride but please bear in mind that we are not insured against loss or damage to them.
